I went to school in the UK in the 70s and 80s, the overriding education opinion was that teaching grammar was a waste of time we should be learning to think and express ourselves. So I learnt how to talk English but not to know any grammar, actually my teacher was really old fashioned so I did learn what nouns, verbs, adverbs and adjectives were.

Still not sure why run on sentences are considered the devils work.
